Arthur<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9e09982 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9e09982\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4b9de95\" data-id=\"4b9de95\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1fab74e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1fab74e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.favell.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image1-4-Copy.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-692\" alt=\"Arthur Favell\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.favell.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image1-4-Copy.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.favell.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image1-4-Copy-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Arthur Favell<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ddc17dc\" data-id=\"ddc17dc\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3437ae6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3437ae6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The eldest son, Arthur junior, was a Teacher of carpentry who had trained at Shoreditch College and was now working for the London County Council.\u00a0 He had joined the 21<sup>st<\/sup> (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) as a part time Territorial Soldier in 1909 at the age of 17.\u00a0 He volunteered for service abroad and embarked for France in March 1915 as a Lance Corporal.\u00a0 Just two months later he was wounded in action and taken to a Field Hospital at Bethune before being transferred to Rouen and then repatriated to England on the 29<sup>th<\/sup> of May.\u00a0 It took just over four months to recover from his wounds and regain fitness before he was once again sent out to France in early October 1915.\u00a0 He was appointed to Lance Serjeant in January 1916 and by May he was a full Serjeant.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6027d0f elementor-reverse-mobile elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6027d0f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-355c572\" data-id=\"355c572\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8962406 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8962406\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Later that same month he was killed in action near to Vimy Ridge.\u00a0 The LCC memorial book states that \u201cThe fighting on Vimy Ridge to the South of Souchez, in May, 1916, when many of the council\u2019s Staff were killed was briefly as follows: &#8211; At evening on 15<sup>th<\/sup> May the British exploded several mines in No Mans Land and the craters were occupied by troops of the 25<sup>th<\/sup> Division.\u00a0 On the 21<sup>st<\/sup> the Germans heavily bombarded the position and during the night 21<sup>st<\/sup>\/22<sup>nd<\/sup>, while the 47<sup>th<\/sup> Division was relieving the 25<sup>th<\/sup>, they captured the craters and even parts of our trench system in rear. \u00a0As already stated it was not thought worthwhile to drive them out.\u00a0 The casualties included Sergt. Arthur Favell\u00a0 (21<sup>st<\/sup> Lond. , Edu) killed on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>..\u201d\u00a0 another 11 of the Councils employees are then listed as being also killed or died of wounds following the action.\u00a0 Arthur is buried in the Cabaret &#8211; Rouge British Cemetery, Pas de Calais.\u00a0 Arthur\u2019s medal index card (MIC) shows that he was entitled to the 1915 Star, War and Victory medals.\u00a0 His service record indicates his medals were returned to be broken up.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-element elementor-element-754be9d\" data-id=\"754be9d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d34bcf5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d34bcf5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Middle son Harry Favell was also a Territorial Soldier at the outbreak of war, having joined the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion London Regiment (The Queen&#8217;s), based at Jamaica Road in Bermondsey.\u00a0 The 22<sup>nd<\/sup> was allocated to the 6<sup>th<\/sup> London Brigade of the London Division and moved to the St Albans area in Hertfordshire before being transported to France, landing at Havre on the 16<sup>th<\/sup> March 1915.\u00a0 After initial promotion to Lance Serjeant, Harry\u2019s eventual rank was Company Quartermaster Serjeant (CQMS).\u00a0 The CQMS and his small team were responsible for delivering ammunition, mail, food and supplies at all times in all conditions.\u00a0\u00a0 The CQMS needed a higher than average level of literacy, arithmetic and an awareness of logistical issues to take responsibility for the stores and its transport.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6875c17 elementor-reverse-mobile elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6875c17\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fb9b5e6\" data-id=\"fb9b5e6\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f37f23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8f37f23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Bringing up the supplies was often more dangerous than holding the front line, involving more exposure to enemy fire while escorting the lumbering horse drawn open carts and then hauling the supplies along communication trenches to the front.\u00a0 Harry would have to continue doing this after he had learned of his brother\u2019s death in 1916.\u00a0 It may have been on one of these missions that Harry won his Military Medal (MM).\u00a0 The 28<sup>th<\/sup> July 1917 edition of the London Gazette announces &#8220;His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Military Medal for bravery in the field to the under-mentioned NCO&#8217;s &amp; men&#8221;.\u00a0 680156 Serjeant H Favell, London Regiment is among those listed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d053234\" data-id=\"d053234\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Later in August 1918 he would win another gallantry award.\u00a0 The London Gazette of 14<sup>th<\/sup> January 1919 announced &#8220;His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, NCOs &amp; men for gallantry and distinguished service in the field&#8221;.\u00a0 Among those awarded is 680156 C\/S\/M H Favell MM, 1\/22 Battalion London Regiment (Bermondsey).\u00a0 The individual citation reads \u201cOn 22<sup>nd<\/sup> \/ 23<sup>rd<\/sup> August 1918, South of Albert, when our troops on the flank were compelled to withdraw under heavy pressure, he displayed great gallantry and disregard of danger, rallying the men by his splendid example under heavy artillery and machine gun fire.\u00a0 He was of great assistance to the only Officer left of the company, and it was largely due to his efforts that a defensive flank was formed that successfully held up the enemy&#8221;.\u00a0 Harry\u2019s DCM was awarded posthumously as he was killed in action just ten days later.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5f5b14b elementor-reverse-mobile elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5f5b14b\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b18b361\" data-id=\"b18b361\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b20992 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b20992\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once he had reached the age of 18, the youngest of the brothers, Frank, joined the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) in 1917.\u00a0 Rather than France, Frank served in the British Expeditionary Force in Italy, who were sent to bolster Italian forces fighting against the Austrians and Hungarians.\u00a0 \u00a0In the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, in October 1918 the HAC were part of combined British, Italian and American force that forced the surrender of the garrison on the strategic island of Papadopoli in the main channel of the River Piave.\u00a0 For this remarkable feat of arms, the HAC was awarded two Distinguished Service Orders, five Military Crosses, three Distinguished Conduct Medals and 29 Military Medals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-35bc75f\" data-id=\"35bc75f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2fb93d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"a2fb93d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"501\" height=\"711\" his brother Harry\u2019s).\u00a0 Just his medal index and HAC record cards exist, along with a service photograph.\u00a0 Frank returned to England on completion of his service and was able to be reunited with his parents and sisters.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d7b9132 elementor-reverse-mobile elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d7b9132\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-da4db90\" data-id=\"da4db90\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a66988 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4a66988\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Having lost two sons, you would expect that Arthur senior would be keen to be out of the army as soon as peace was declared.&nbsp; But, at the beginning of March 1919, he relinquished his right to demobilisation and signed up to serve for a further year in the army of occupation in Germany.&nbsp; Perhaps he did not want to return home following his loss and this might explain why Arthur junior&#8217;s remaining medals were not claimed.&nbsp; However, his intended service in Germany seems never to have happened, as shortly afterwards he was in a Military Hospital in Eastbourne suffering from influenza.&nbsp; The impact of the war is thought never to have left him and his death in 1934 was thought to be suicide.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-70a363c\" data-id=\"70a363c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1041f85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1041f85\" data-element_type=\"widget\"
