the river, from which he took his surname\u201d<\/p><h4>Stratford St Mary, Suffolk \u2013 Baptismal Register<\/h4><p>This extract from an eighteenth century parish register is an unusual example of obtaining a surname.\u00a0 Most Englishmen had such an addition to their Christian names by the early fourteenth century.\u00a0 As in John Rivers case they were chosen and imposed by neighbours or carers.\u00a0 In early times the number of Christian names was very limited and as the population grew, extra names were essential to distinguish all the Toms, Dicks and Harrys one from another.<\/p><p>Early surnames were not passed on automatically at first from Father to Son.\u00a0 They described one unique individual, but gradually the advantage of surnames was realised for proving descent in official documents such as ownership of land.\u00a0 Genealogies could be traced over hundreds of years allowing inheritance of land or property to be better regulated.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-5b0be552\" \u2018surnames\u2019 (extra names) began, starting after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 for the Nobility and Gentry.\u00a0 Most ordinary English people had hereditary surnames by the end of the fourteenth century, as did the Favells.<\/p><p>Villagers who lived for several generations in the same house or locality often inherited a surname linking them with the place name, or some natural feature of the landscape, as in \u2018John of Tilbrook\u2019 or \u2018Henry Brook\u2019.\u00a0 Men who were on the move often retained the name of their birthplace as their surname, which helps family historians to this day.<\/p><p>Skilled craftsmen or traders were known by their professional names, Miller, Carpenter, Smith.\u00a0 Nicknames have always been popular and medieval people loved to label their enemies with rude or uncomplimentary surnames as our family must ruefully admit.\u00a0 The earliest man in our family to bear the name Favell and pass it on to his sons was called after a medieval type of horse \u2013 \u2018fallow coloured\u2019.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section for \u2018Fawn\u2019) was a proverbial character known for his evil ways and characteristics.\u00a0 The tale of Favel or Fauvel (French for \u2018fallow coloured\u2019) originated in France, but at the time the English Crown owned a great part of that country and many Englishmen of Norman descent still spoke French as their main language.<\/p><p>The expression \u2018to curry favour\u2019 is a garbled version of the medieval phrase \u2018to curry Favel\u2019 meaning to associate themselves with this epitome of all vice.\u00a0 \u2018Curry\u2019 is an old name for \u2018grooming\u2019.<\/p><p>A French tale called \u201cLe Roman de Fauvel\u201d was current in educated circles in England shortly after its appearance in 1316, closely followed by a musical version.\u00a0 Ordinary people had already heard the tale and the surname Favell or Fauvel was already in use by our family before the \u2018Roman\u2019 appeared.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-ba43757\" data-id=\"ba43757\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72d36f60 deception<\/p><p>A =Avarice:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greed of every description: fame, wealth, political power.\u00a0 In a portrait of Fauvel he is dressed in fine clothes and wears a crown.<\/p><p>V = Vilanie:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Villainy<\/p><p>or<\/p><p>V = Variete:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Double dealing, trickery<\/p><p>E = Envie:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As well as envy it implies covetness<\/p><p>L = Lachete:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cowardice<\/p><p>In Latin, scholars talked about Favell andii Vicium \u201cthe vice of Favel\u201d, which was the subject of a popular song in the musical version of the tale, still available on CD.<\/p><p><em>\u201c<\/em><em>In the year 1310 manuscript copies of a scurrilous satirical poem, the Roman de Fauvel, began circulating around Paris. Corrosive, pitiless, the poet, a mid-level government functionary named Gervais de Bus, attacked what he saw as the pervasive corruption of society&#8217;s institutions &#8212; both church and state &#8212; and of the men who wielded power within those institutions.
