Peter Neville Martin Favell was born on the 9th April 1925. His father Frank ran a market gardening business at Haydon Farm, Norton, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, but originally came from Sandy in Bedfordshire.
In 1939 Peter was working for his father on the farm, alongside his older and younger brothers Frank and Brian. He also had a sister, Joan. When World War Two came, Peter was recruited into the Suffolk Regiment, probably on reaching the age of 18 in 1943. After training in the UK, he went across to France, but when the war ended, he was retained and posted to Palestine, peace keeping in the unrest caused by the creation Israel.
His older brother Frank, named after his father, ran his own market gardening and florist business at Greenwood Farm, Mickfield, near Stowmarket in Suffolk. After the war, Peter was probably living and working here and he used the address when claiming his service medals. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the War Medal and the General Service medal with clasp for Palestine 1945-48.
Peter died in 2004, just short of his 79th Birthday. On the 16th July 2025, Peter’s war service medals were auctioned by Lockdales in Ipswich with a hammer price of £200 (plus commission). On the face of it, a high price for the combination of awards, possibly due to the Regiment or someone who really wanted to own them. Hopefully they went to a good home.
